The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test that measures the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who wish to enroll in English-speaking universities.
Accepted by many academic and professional institutions worldwide, TOEFL is one of the two major English language tests, alongside IELTS. The test is a trademark of the Educational Testing Service (ETS), a private non-profit organization that designs and administers it.
TOEFL scores are issued by ETS and are sent directly to institutions. These scores are valid for two years from the test date. The test consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, with scores ranging from 0 to 30 per section, and a total score of 0 to 120.
The TOEFL typically takes around 3 hours to complete, though you should plan for about 3½ hours in total, accounting for check-in time.
Score requirements vary by institution, and it is up to individual colleges and universities to determine the scores they require.
